This movie... My goodness. Usually, I am not a fan of horror movies that include anything religious, but seeing that actors, Lidya Jewett and Leslie Odom Jr. who play our daddy daughter duo, Angela and Victor Fielding. After a tragic death that haunts them both to this day, they continue to try to be there for one another as Angela starts to grow up with her friend, Katherine (played by Olivia O'Neill). The two of them have been inseparable for years on end, and decided one day that they wanted to have some time together alone. In the woods... Because all the good things happen in the woods. They end up going missing for three days, but believed it to only be three hours. Everything from there is downhill as both the families of the girls believe that they have brought something back, or someone. With help from past religious individuals who have been through this issue before, they find some guidance as both of these families become connected by a dark and evil spirit. With one family believing traditionally, and the other continuing to have their own opinion about faith as a whole, they have to join together to try and save both of their girls from the dark spirit that controls them. Through this process we learn about different cultures and their religious beliefs. How they can heal people, the process of it all, and how their communities work in numbers to keep ones spirit good and pure.
The origin of an exorcism is when one is controlled or possessed by a dark spirit, but, according to theologian and assistant professor of philosophy, theology, and religion at Saint Leo University in Florida, Stephen Okey, "Exorcism is a prayer or ritual that is meant to remove the influence of demonic, evil power over a person." When under the control of demons, you don't have control over yourself. Things that may seem fake to you, might even up being real. Nothing is fully controlled by your own will and at times it can cause excruciating pain that would harm your physical body but not your spiritual body. Which is slightly mentioned and shown in the movie. It was clear that whenever the spirit was speaking in the demonic voice, their spirit form wasn't there and was in the dark realm that the the demons live in. Switching between the physical and the spiritual world, fusing the two. Both girls are fighting for their lives while also in a sense being fused together and the demon slowly getting a hold of both of their spirits in order to gain more power and communicate through both worlds. Causing their worlds to fully merge, the religious believers come together to help them both find their way back to the physical world. They prevail but at what price do they have to pay? Overall I give the movie a 8.5/10, definitely was a movie I needed to pray after and knew that since it is a movie based off of true events, it was something I didn't want to play with at all.
