Leo. Adam Sandler has done it again.

On Wednesday, I saw the recent addition to the Netflix Original animated film category, Leo. Starring Adam Sandler as Leo, Bill Bur as Squrtile, and the rest of the Sandler family. Sandler's wife and two daughters play the role of one of the mothers of the students that are in the classroom. The story follows Leo, the class pet lizard, who believes he is on his last leg because of something he heard one of the parents say to each other during a PTA meeting. During the meeting, the parents learned that their children's teacher would be on medical leave until she had her baby. The parents are furious about it and complain the entire time about how their children won't be able to learn with a substitute. Come to find out, the substitute, Ms. Malkin (voiced by Cecily Strong), isn't to be played with. Since finding out, Leo has been paired with a student every night to be taken care of and convinced that since he doesn't have much time, he should help these students with the issues they've been hiding to get through the fifth grade. Leo ends up giving them great advice on how to solve their issues. How? You might ask. By talking to them! It is clear the creators, Adam Sandler, Paul Sado, and Robert Smigel, wanted to poke fun at other animated films. But when the kids find out he told them all the same thing, his so-called "friend," Squrtile tells the children that Leo never cared about them and that they should all hate him. The substitute ends up taking matters into her own hands when she also finds out that Leo can talk. From there, loyalty is tested and friendships are almost destroyed between everyone.

Leo was amazing! For it to have a bigger audience with children and adults unlike Disney's WISH, it definitely caught my attention. The jokes were there for both age groups and none of them were inappropriate. Jokes of this matter, are more relatable jokes for adults rather than just making dirty jokes. I also enjoyed the poke at Disney musicals. There was a scene in the movie when one of the parents was "gloating" about how much money they had, and there were dancing clocks with faces that were actually real within the story. The father expressed how rich he was to have them at the house whenever he needed and I enjoyed that. Usually in animated features, musical numbers happen and are used as an explanation for what is happening in the scene, but, these musical numbers were included and involved with every scene instead of it not being relevant to the plot. Plus, hearing Adam Sandler belt out some vocals and hit some high notes was very impressive. Wasn't something I expected from him for this movie, or from him.

Even though we have seen Sandler dominate the animation scene with the Hotel Transylvania franchise, it was great to see him as someone as new and entertaining as all of the other characters he's played in the past. I hope that in the future, different animation companies continue to work with him in order to create entertaining, hilarious, animated films.
