In today's society, it is already hard enough to be accepted and feel welcomed but how hard do you think it would be if you were a shapeshifting, pink-haired, teenage old lady? Very hard for our wannabe villain, Nimona. The plot of Nimona follows a knight, Ballister Boldheart, who has been framed for a death he didn't cause. While trying to prove his innocence, he meets Nimona who has always had it out for the kindom since they branded her a monster and made her as this villain she isn't. From then we learn more about how words can definently hurt and make you think that you're something that you're not, and that you should never be scared to fully love who you are.
This movie to me will not only be a support blanket for children/teenagers who are slowly starting to learn about themselves and who they want to be as a person. But, it also shines a light on how quickly someone's words can affect them and have them stuck in this forever negative mindset about yourself. For example, in the movie Nimona, she expresses that, "I don't know what's scarier. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart...or that sometimes, I just wanna let 'em." With this specific quote you see vulnarability but you also see someone who has been battling this depression alone in this high up tower for over thoughsands of years. Those bottled up emotions can cause a person to not only think dark thoughts but also, can cause a person to believe that they actually are what people say and nothing more. Nimona was ready to comepletely end her life because she believed what people within the kindom were saying. Which is a form of bullying. Even though the topic of depression and suicide can be a lot for children, I believe it's better to have those conversations as soon as they experence any type of bullying. Before it gets to be too late. Children should be able to have those conversations with their families in order to also learn about how society may treat them due to a differences they have. The only reason Nimona was treated differently was because she had the power to shapeshift but never used it for evil unless provoked or pushed to that limit.
Overall the movie was a solid 5/5 for me! With action and adventure, a great cast (including Ru Paul, Lorrain Toussaint, and Chloe Grace Moretz), and diverse racial representation and LGBTQ+ representation, there's a little bit for everyone. There's a little bit of love to go around to everyone.
