Netflix's manga-to-anime remix, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, has just been released to the world and it is amazing! I've read every single book almost twice and it was incredible to see the director Abel Gongora, and writers BenDavid Grabinski and Bryan Lee O'Malley (who also wrote the comics) come together to create a fun, thrilling, different take on the story. If you've read the books, and seen the live-action adaptation, then they'll know that this is a remix of the two. Still tells the same story we know and love but with a slight addition to keep people entertained with action scenes and slight changes to the storyline. All while keeping the same cast with the same characters, we got to see them all work as a team again behind the scenes like one big happy family. A real one.
Taking the movie Scott Pilgrim Versus the World, and the comic Scott Pilgrim(with different titles for each volume) we get this remix of the two, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Following a dream about the outgoing and beautiful Ramona Flowers (voiced by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) Scott Pilgrim (voiced by Michael Cera) is determined to find this woman and know who she is. While also in a complicated, not really real, relationship with a seventeen-year-old high school student, Knives Chow (voiced by Ellen Wong). But, to be fair, they only held hands, once. Without giving her any type of heads up, Scott pursues Ramona, who also starts to fall as well. Things go wrong when one of Ramona's evil ex-boyfriends finds out and team together to take Scott down. This first evil ex that Scott interacts with is Matthew Patel (voiced by Satya Bhaba), whom Ramona dated back in middle school, and since then he has tried to prove that he is the best of the best. Since he is Ramona's first evil ex, Matthew believes that he is better than everyone else and stops at nothing to prove it. Once he wins, or he believes he wins, against Scott, Matthew starts to become more entitled and makes himself the "leader" of their league. The Evil Ex-Boyfriends League, which was originally run by Gideon Graves (voiced by Jason Schwartzman), who is Ramona's seventh evil ex-boyfriend who lost the spot as leader when he lost a battle against Matthew for the spot. The rest of the story follows that they all want her attention and a shot to get back together with her, which is not even in Ramona for-front of her mind. She's more focused on protecting Scott from harm.
Even though this was only the first season, I'm excited to see what will be coming up next for this new rendition of the franchise. I hope they continue to pull ideas from both the movie and the comic in order to keep it as an original idea instead of being a straight book-to-show or movie-to-show type of situation. I enjoyed that yes, it had the same characters and the same gist of the plot, but it also is its own story that gives us a deeper insight into not only Scott and Ramona but all the other characters as well. I hope to see more of it in the next season if they get one.
