What do the controversial Tiffany Haddish and Asian Angela Bassett, Ali Wong, have in common? They are the comical dynamic duo on the adult animated show, Tuca and Birde. This show follows two female birds, Tuca( a toucan voiced by Tiffany Haddish), and Birde( a song thrush voiced by the fabulous Ali Wong) and their wild adventures through adulthood. It covers, love, friendships, LGBTQ+ related situations, and mental health situations. It's an impressive adult comedy that I believed deserved more seasons. It was never clear as to why it was canceled, twice, other than there were too many other adult animated series to compete with. But, were they really worth getting rid of to keep others?
Creator and writer, Lisa Hanawalt, has worked on not only this show but also the Netflix original, Bojack Horseman. Which has won multiple awards as well as Tuca and Birdie as well. But I believe this show was more focused towards women, not only because of the two main characters being female but also because of the topics that are discussed. For example, one of the main characters, Tuca, goes through a very toxic relationship that she truly believed was good for her. We've all been through this once of twice either through a friendship or intimate relationship. How she gets out though is something you wouldn't expect from her character. Tuca is known for being very outspoken and bold when it comes to life, but, when she meets Kora(voiced by Sasheer Zamata) who is the complete opposite from her. They constantly clash as Kora tries to change Tuca and her ways, and even ends up succeeding, making her into something Tuca isn't. Causing them to drift apart when Kora ghosts her during a natural disaster. Instead of Kora checking on Tuca, she went on a company cruise and shrugged at her when she saw Tuca swimming to Kora's lighthouse to make sure Kora was okay. Expressing to Birdie that Tuca just wanted to make sure Kora was okay, not fully focusing on her health and safety. Some of us have been there too huh? On a more positive note, Tuca used this breakup to become a better version of herself and work towards speaking on what she believes in as well as speaking up for herself also. Not letting people or relationships change who Tuca truly is, which is what we should try to do for ourselves as well.
Overall, the show helps guide relationships, friendships, womanhood, all while making you laugh and think about if these animals and plants would actually do these things. I recommend it to all except for children, this is definitely not a cartoon for them.
